Feel On Top of the World — Your Somatic Intelligence Tells You How
Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, in a rut, overlooked, out of control? That’s what happened to Samantha…until she learned to tune in to her somatic intelligence. She sat at her desk, staring at an endless to-do list. Her shoulders were tight, her jaw clenched, and despite the third cup of coffee, exhaustion weighed her down. She prided herself on being a high-achiever — always pushing, always performing — but lately, she felt like she was running on fumes. When a friend suggested she start paying attention to her body’s signals, she laughed it off, “Somatic intelligence? That’s just a fad. I need a real-world solution!” She didn’t have time for her friend’s nonsense. But one day, in the middle of an important presentation, her body made the decision for her — a pounding headache, shallow breath, and a sudden wave of dizziness forced her to stop. It was a wake-up call.
What she learned: the key to sustaining her success wasn’t doing more but tuning in more. Her body had the wisdom she needed to thrive!
As a high-achieving woman, you’re no stranger to using your brain to solve problems and make things happen. That’s using one of your intelligences — your cognitive intelligence. But staying in your head, doesn’t allow you to access a whole new level of wisdom, the intelligence that’s in your body. Somatic intelligence is all about listening to your body’s signals, managing your energy, and regulating your nervous system so you can show up as your best self — without burning out. Let’s break somatic intelligence down in a way that makes it easy to integrate into your daily life.
Somatic Intelligence is, in fact, the first piece of the puzzle. What puzzle? I’ve developed a holistic framework designed to help high-achieving women step into their fullest potential — personally, professionally, and energetically. It’s called the EMERGE method. It was born from a multitude of disciplines I’ve studied and practiced over the years. All of the work I’ve done has led me to EMERGE. The first E stands for Embody: Somatic & Energetic Intelligence. It’s only when we learn to listen to our body wisdom that we can release stressors and whole-heartedly embrace opportunities that let us lead our most authentic lives. (See how one of my clients learned this.)
Getting Started: Tune In To Your Somatic Intelligence
1. Listening to Your Body
Your body constantly gives you clues about how you’re feeling — mindful self awareness will help you learn to recognize them AND avoid stress and exhaustion before they hit.
Paying Attention to Your Internal Signals: This means noticing your body’s cues (sensations) — like hunger, tension, or restlessness — so you can take care of yourself before you’re running on empty.
Recognizing Patterns in Your Body: Do you get tight shoulders during meetings? A racing heart before presentations? Do your automatic responses reveal a pattern for how you deal with confrontation, anger, stress? Noticing these patterns helps you take action before emotions take over.
Aligning with Your Natural Rhythms: Some parts of the day you’re full of energy, while others feel like a slog. Knowing when you’re at your best helps you plan your tasks smarter.
Unwinding Stored Tension: Recognizing where you hold stress (like clenching your jaw or hunching your shoulders) makes it easier to relax and reset.
2. Balancing Your Nervous System
A well-balanced nervous system helps you stay calm, focused, and resilient no matter what life throws your way.
Balancing Activation and Rest: Your nervous system has two speeds—go mode and rest mode. Learning to switch between them keeps you from running on adrenaline all the time.
Responding Rather Than Reacting to Stress: Stress is inevitable, but how you handle it makes all the difference. Simple techniques like deep breathing can help you feel balanced and calm even under pressure.
Prioritizing Recovery and Replenishment: Just like a good workout, you need time to recover from daily stress. Prioritizing rest, play, and mindfulness to help you bounce back faster.
Strengthening Your Inner Resilience: The more you practice managing stress, the better you get at handling life’s ups and downs without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Managing Your Energy Wisely
Sustainable success means knowing when to push forward and when to recharge so you don’t burn out.
Tracking Your Energy Flow: Pay attention to when you feel the most energized and schedule your most demanding tasks accordingly.
Honoring Your Limits: Be honest with yourself about how much you can take on. Saying “yes” to everything isn’t a badge of honor — it’s a fast track to exhaustion.
Using Energy with Intention: Focus your energy on what truly matters. Delegate or drop the things that drain you without adding real value.
Thriving, Not Just Sustaining: You don’t have to choose between success and well-being. With smart energy management, you can have both.
