when you unlock something, you often don’t know exactly what you’re going to find. It might be a pleasant surprise, or it might even be a little bit frightening. A good way to assess your potential and how it’s being held back is to look at the way you communicate with yourself and others. The words you speak are not the only way you communicate. Your tone of voice, speech patterns, facial expressions, hand gestures, body positioning, and eye contact all deliver a message. And if you’re not in total alignment, your words may say one thing, but your body says another.

What do I mean? Take for example the stress that comes from confrontational situations. Western medicine has finally recognized that the way your mind reacts to stress will change your posture and physical health. Your shoulders will draw up toward your ears, your back and neck muscles contract and shorten, your jaw tightens, your teeth clench, your blood pressure rises, you experience pain and so on.

And it works both ways! Your body posture shapes how you feel. Slumped shoulders and clenched jaws don’t just reflect stress; they create it.

Imagine that you need to express how you feel to someone who will be less than receptive. Your body is rigid; perhaps you have slightly hunched shoulders. Your eyes are downcast, hands are clenched, and your face shows your apprehension. Does this body posture make you feel more confident? Hardly. Will you be able to express yourself calmly, or will it end up in sharp words being spoken?

For example, one client was struggling with confidence during high-pressure meetings. Through somatic coaching, she realized she held her breath and collapsed her chest under pressure. With some simple awareness and movement practices, she began showing up more grounded. And soon, her voice carried more influence and ease.

Here’s a simple mindfulness practice that allows you to experience how somatic coaching unlocks your potential. I call it: Center and Feel the Shift.

Pause. Sit or stand in a quiet space for a moment. Take a slow breath in through your nose and gently exhale through your mouth.

Feel your feet. Notice the contact your feet make with the floor. Allow yourself to really feel the ground supporting you.

Stack your spine. Bring gentle awareness to your posture. Lengthen through your spine without forcing it,  like a string is lifting you from the crown of your head. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears.

Inhabit your center. Bring your awareness to the center of your body,  just below your navel. This is often called your core. Breathe into this area, imagining it as a calm, steady center of gravity.

Notice. How do you feel now compared to before the exercise? Do you feel more present, calm, or alert? What might shift if you practiced this before a difficult conversation, presentation, or decision?

This is the essence of somatic coaching: small shifts in body awareness create powerful changes in how you show up.

 Why does Somatic Coaching work?
