What Autumn Reveals: Let Go When Something Has Completed Its Season

In nature, letting go is not the same as losing something. A fallen leaf doesn’t disappear. It breaks down and returns to the soil. Autumn doesn’t ask the trees to explain themselves before they let go. The leaves change color, loosen their grip, and fall. There’s no apology, no attempt to keep what once belonged to summer, no frantic effort to hold on just a little longer. What has completed its season is allowed to return to the earth.

However, we find it hard to let go because it feels like giving up. We’re driven to make things work, even when it’s difficult. We’re tenacious, resilient, and accustomed to finding a way forward, even when the path is demanding.

What if we’ve misunderstood what it means to let go?

Some things in our lives have served us well, yet may not belong in the season ahead. In nature, letting go is not the same as losing something. A fallen leaf doesn’t disappear. It breaks down and returns to the soil. Over time, what once belonged to one season becomes nourishment for another. What looks like an ending from the outside is part of a larger process of transformation.

There’s wisdom in that for us.

Some things in our lives have served us well, yet may not belong in the season ahead. A role you once needed. A way of proving yourself. A belief about what it means to be successful. The habit of being the strong one. An old definition of responsibility. Even a version of yourself you worked very hard to become. These things were not mistakes. They were what you needed at the time.

The question is whether they still have something life-sustaining to contribute, or whether you’re carrying life-draining things because they’ve become familiar.

This is where your body can offer a different kind of knowing. We often try to make decisions about letting go entirely through thought. We weigh the pros and cons. We analyze the past and try to predict the future. All of that is useful, but it’s wise to invite the body to the conversation, too.

Notice what happens when you imagine carrying something that you sense may be complete. Does your breathing change? Do your shoulders tighten? Does your jaw engage? Do you feel yourself leaning forward, bracing, or working harder?

Then imagine setting it down for a moment. What happens in your body? Perhaps there’s more breath. More space. A softening you didn’t realize you were waiting for. That space matters.

When we stop spending so much energy maintaining what has already completed its purpose, we become more available to what’s emerging. The energy that was tied up in preserving an old pattern can support something new.

Let Go…It’s An Act of Leadership

Inner authority involves knowing when to move forward while also recognizing when something has reached the end of its season, and you trust yourself enough to allow the ending. Autumn teaches us that you don’t need to have the entire next chapter figured out before you release what no longer belongs in this one.

And nature doesn’t rush the process. The leaf falls. The earth receives it. Time and unseen processes do their work. We can allow ourselves some of that same patience. You may not know yet what will grow from what you’re releasing. But you do know that carrying it forward no longer feels right. And that’s enough information to begin.

“Dream Big, Start Small.” Here's the one thing you can do today.

Here’s a somatic practice to help you know when to let go. It’s called Making Room

Here’s a somatic practice to help you know when to let go. It’s called Making Room. Find a comfortable seated or standing position and let yourself settle. Feel the support beneath your feet or the chair beneath you. Take a few natural breaths without trying to change them.

Bring to mind one thing you are considering letting go of. It might be a responsibility, expectation, role, belief, relationship pattern, or way of approaching your life. Choose something that feels meaningful but not overwhelming.

Notice how your body responds when you imagine continuing to carry it. Where do you feel effort? Tightness? Holding? Perhaps your chest, shoulders, stomach, hands, or face become more engaged.

Now imagine placing that thing beside you rather than carrying it. You aren’t throwing it away. You’re just setting it down. Take another breath and notice what changes. Where is there more space? What becomes easier to feel? Is there a part of you that wants to reach back and pick it up again? Notice without judging it.

Finally, ask your body quietly: What might become possible if I no longer had to carry this in the same way?

Without forcing an answer, let a sensation, image, word, or feeling arise. You’re not trying to create your next step. You are practicing making room for what may emerge.

Like the falling leaves, you don’t have to know what the compost will become. You only have to trust that release can be part of renewal.

In my EMERGE method, growth is defined as you unfolding into your fullest expression with clarity and purpose. When you recognize your defining moments, you see that your evolution has always been guided by an inner wisdom that knows when to shift, release, and rise. Would you like to learn more about EMERGE? Journaling Reflection Prompts

What am I continuing to carry because it’s familiar, even though it may have completed its season?

What changes in my body when I imagine setting it down?

What might become possible if I created more space before deciding what comes next?
