Will You Work from Home Post Pandemic? Self Leadership Skills Required!

If you want to work from home post pandemic, the key is learning these 4 self-care and self-leadership skills that keep you moving forward. “Self-care is, fundamentally, about bringing balance back to a life that has grown imbalanced from too many commitments or responsibilities.” ~ Robyn L. Gobin, author of The Self-Care Prescription

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your work routine? Do you still go to the office to work? Or were you forced to work from home?  Perhaps you already worked from home as an entrepreneur, coach or business owner. Whatever your circumstances, this unique time in our history creates an opportunity to think about what you really want from life, including whether or not you’ll work from home post pandemic.

As with many of my clients, I had to quickly learn how to work from home. Thankfully, I was already using Zoom to work with clients who live in different parts of the country (and the world!) so was able to transition to that format very easily. I’m also grateful I already had self-leadership and self-care practices and routines in place, which allow me to balance new demands in a healthful way. It’s like riding a bicycle — we have to keep moving forward to keep your balance.

There are a lot of benefits from working from home. Many of my clients have expressed that when they work from home, they have a better work-life balance. They feel less burnout and enjoy their work, more time with family, feel more productive, and have more time to exercise and socialize. What benefits have you experienced?

Will you work from home post pandemic? This may be more challenging, if you haven’t been using this time to hone your self-leadership or self-care skills. Here are some things that have helped me…

Have an outcome/results-oriented outlook.

Work from home gives you more flexibility to be mindfully in the moment. No one is looking over your shoulder. Instead of punching a time clock, progress is seen by the results you achieve. This takes the focus off the process. If you need to throw a load of laundry in the machine or run an errand;  that may be the break you need to think about a problem and find a solution.

However, if procrastination or being easily distracted is your norm, you might want to strengthen yourself in the following ways:

Creatively working outside the box.

Shaking up where and how you work may have disrupted some of your previous routines. Once you get past the shock, you may find that this is the push you need to become more creative and be more willing to take risks. When inspiration strikes, you don’t have to wait until you get to the office tomorrow. Here are some resources to spark your muse!

Develop systems, routines and rituals

The work/life balance will not happen by chance. Developing a  very “relaxed’ attitude toward work could lead you to not returning emails or phone calls in a timely fashion, which gives the impression that you’re not dependable. Here are some things to consider:

See opportunities instead of roadblocks.

This past year has been challenging, no doubt about it. But I’ve also seen it fuel amazing personal growth for many of my clients. The status-quo got thrown out the window so it meant re-looking at priorities through a new lens and finding new ways to achieve greatness.

I think what Wayne Dyer says about balance really applies now more than ever. “Getting in balance is not so much about adopting new strategies to change your behaviors, as it is about realigning yourself in all of your thoughts so as to create a balance between what you desire and how you conduct your life on a daily basis.”
